Ok, don’t kill me for bringing up Google killers again. I am fully aware Google rocks and Google will not be easily killed off by some junior startup, or even by improved Microsoft Live technology.
I’m talking about something different here – I’m talking about something obvious that Microsoft could use to overlap Google using what it does best: Windows.
Yeah, that’s Windows 7 loading up. But my question is, what should Win7 be all about? (We have time to think, if the Windows Vista load time is any indication of things to come…)
In my opinion, if Microsoft wants to “kill” Google, Win7 should be all about changing the way we interact with our desktop OS. And Microsoft should follow two main principles:
- Get rid of the browser
- Incorporate search into the OS coreΒ
Windows has around 90% of market share right now, but it is slowly losing market share to Apple’s OSX. But that’s not important right now. What is important is to get a look at that enormous market share: 90% of all home computers run Windows. 90%!
And what do all those people do with Windows: they run software and use their browsers to search (via Google).
Do you see the chain of events here: Windows —> Browser —> Google. If you cut the browser, there is no Google. But then, you say, you need a new paradigm. How do people interact with the Internet? How do websites work? How does one search? How can you see stuff online???
Ok… I don’t have 3 PhDs in computer science, so you’ll forgive me for not providing the answer. But I do know that Microsoft is in a stellar place to take control of the computer desktop again. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a Microsoft fanboy or anything (although I like Office and Windows), and I’m just venting some theories here. And it strikes me very odd that Microsoft hands out the golden egg to Google, building the main browser and OS that Google has to rely on to sell its ads…
I’m also curious to hear your opinions. Be sure to share them in the comments! π
